The Pigs were coming out late, but that didn’t mean we were going to give up on them. After a long 1,000-yard walk, we set up on a Sounder of 20 Pigs, got some shots off, and dropped two.

The rest of the night turned into a wild chase—driving from field to field like madmen, scanning through Thermal Equipment, and covering as much ground as possible to find more Hogs. By the time we were walking back to the van, the sun was up, and a thick morning fog had settled over the field, making for a unique and eerie photo to mark the end of the Wild Hog Hunt.

Night Two:

A Complete Turnaround

What a difference a night makes. After spending most of the first night waiting and chasing, the second night was all action. The first field we hit was full of Wild Pigs, and the Hunters wasted no time. They took down 6 Hogs in a fast-paced stalk, making every shot count.

The next couple of hours were all about putting in the work—stalking, shooting, dragging, and butchering. Since the group needed to head home, we wrapped things up with a great haul of meat and got them on the road at a decent time.

Every Hog Hunt is different, and sometimes the Pigs make you work for it. This past Hunting Trip was a 2 Night Hog Hunt with a group of Bear Guides from Maine. The first night was slow, with no Wild Pigs down. But on the second night, things got interesting.

Night One:

Plenty of Ground, No Pigs Down

The first night, we covered a lot of ground but didn’t get the results we were hoping for. That’s just how it goes sometimes—Wild Hogs are unpredictable, and they can disappear when you least expect it. But even without any Hogs on the ground, it was still a good night in the field, and the guys had plenty of stories to share about Guiding Bear hunts in Maine.

Night Two:

The Sounder Appears

The second night, luck turned in our favor. We spotted a Sounder of about 20 to 30 Hogs and made our approach. Moving carefully with the wind right, we closed in to about 100 yards before the Hunters took their shots. Two Wild Hogs went down, though one was just a Small Piglet—not exactly ideal for a trophy photo.

Hunting and Swapping Stories

Even when the Feral Hogs aren’t flooding the fields, the best part of these Thermal Hunts is the experience. These guys were Seasoned Hunters, and it was great to hear all about Bear Hunting up north—how they track and bait, the thrill of a close encounter, and the challenges of guiding in deep woods. It’s always cool to compare different styles of hunting, and this Hog Hunting Trip was a reminder of how much there is to learn from other Hunters.

The night started strong when Harry dropped his First Coyote. It was a textbook setup—Calling a Coyote in to about 50-60 yards before sealing the deal. A great way to kick things off.

Next up: Wild Pigs. They got on a Sounder early, but despite solid effort, nothing hit the ground. Then came two more opportunities—one pair and one single. But when the wind shifted, the pair caught their scent and vanished. The single? Pulled a Houdini and disappeared into the night.

“Hunting is 100% Present Opportunity,” Capt Max said. “Skill, luck, time all have some play. But mainly, going outside is the biggest part.” That’s the truth of it—showing up, putting in the time, and being ready when the moment comes.

A One-Night Hog Hunt with Guide Clayton

At Pig Problem, we see all kinds of Hog Hunts—some quick and easy, others that turn into an all-night pursuit. On a recent 1 Night Thermal Hog Hunt, Guide Clayton led a group of Hunters who were eager, ready, and, most importantly, willing to listen. That combination usually leads to success, and this Wild Hog Hunt was no exception.

The Night of Hunting started with two go-arounds. The first encounter was a Single Hog, a good warm-up for the group to get dialed in with their pew pews and Thermal. They executed perfectly, making a clean shot and getting their first Hog Down.

But the real excitement came later. At around 2 a.m., Clayton spotted a Sounder of Pigs moving through the fields. This was the moment the group had been waiting for. With precision and patience, they followed Clayton’s guidance, setting up for a well-coordinated shot. When the green light was given, chaos erupted as Multiple Hogs Dropped in the field.

Night 1:

The first night started off with some action. A Lone Sow and her litter of Piglets made the mistake of stepping into the Hunters’ sights. The team quickly took down the mother, but the Piglets, small and fast, scattered into the brush. Shots were fired, but those little ones proved tough to hit. While none of them dropped, the night was far from uneventful.

The second night delivered exactly what every Hog Hunter hopes for—a Sounder moving through the fields. The hunters wasted no time and managed to take down 3 Wild Pigs, adding to the success of the Hunting Trip. CJ and Noah, feeling the adrenaline, decided to get up close for a more personal picture with their harvest. Excitement was high, and the night was a solid win for the team.

The Silent Fields

Thermal Hog Hunting isn’t always action-packed, and the third night was a reminder of that. Despite covering miles of ground, checking every hot spot, and staying out as long as possible, not a single Hog showed itself. Ron and Doug wasted no time, making a clean shot and dropping the Wild Pig right where it stood. The rest of the night, however, was quiet. Despite the stillness of the fields, the energy remained high. The Hog Hunters spent the hours swapping stories, sharing laughs, and enjoying the kind of camaraderie that makes nights in the field truly memorable.

The second night brought more action—and a battle with the weather. Thunder and lightning loomed in the distance, but that didn’t slow the Wild Hog Hunt. Three separate Hunting Stalks put the hunters in position, and on one approach, a Hog was still standing when Clayton and Zev moved in. Without hesitation, they lined up side by side and finished the job with precision shots.

Even as the storm rolled in, the night was filled with music, stories, and nonstop conversation. Ron and Doug proved to be not only Skilled Hunters but also great company, making for an Unforgettable Hunt. A Strong Start with Hogs and Coyotes

The hunt started off strong, dropping a coyote in the very first field. A promising sign of the action to come.

Later in the night, the group spotted a Single Hog at 850 yards. Rather than rushing in, they took a slow, methodical stalk to close the distance. When they finally got into position, the shot was perfect, and the Hog Dropped where it stood.

A second opportunity came at a spot near Preston. Another single hog presented itself, and they took the shot—but this one wasn’t as clean. The hog got back up and managed to escape into the darkness. It happens, but the thrill of the hunt was still there.

Night 2:

No Pigs, But Plenty of Excitemen

The same group was back for round two, and Zev quickly realized these were some of the easiest Hunters to guide. They were super chill, excited about everything, and willing to listen and learn.

While the Wild Pigs didn’t cooperate, the night still had plenty of action. A Coyote went down, and they even took a shot at a beaver, keeping things interesting. For hunters with almost no experience—barely even handling guns before this Hunting Trip—they followed every instruction perfectly. Zev had nothing but praise for them, saying, “I love these guys.”

On the very last field of the night, a Wild Pig finally stepped out. The team moved into position, but just as they were setting up, a group of deer spooked and bolted. For a second, it looked like the opportunity might slip away—but luck was on their side. The deer ran off in the opposite direction, and the Pig stayed put just long enough for a clean shot. One Hog Down, and what looked like a lost cause turned into a Successful Hunt.

The second night started off much like the first. The first field checked was empty, but instead of moving on immediately, the team decided to wait. Sometimes, patience is key.

Just as they were about to leave, movement flickered on the Thermal. Hogs had finally moved in. The Hunters got set up and took their shot, dropping one as the rest of the Sounder scattered into the night. Another great success.

Night 1:

A Quick Opportunity

Guide Clayton kicked off a 2 Night Hog Hunt with a group eager to take down some Wild Hogs. Not long after heading out, they Spotted a Sounder feeding in a Farmer’s Field. With the Thermal Equipment dialed in and a solid shooting position, the Hunters lined up their shots. The crack of suppressed things that google doesn’t like cut through the night, and when the dust settled, 2 Hogs were down. The rest of the Sounder scattered into the tree line, leaving no more opportunities for follow-up shots.

Despite covering more ground and checking multiple fields, no other Pigs presented themselves for the rest of the night. That’s just how it goes sometimes—some nights, it’s nonstop action, and others, the Wild Pigs get lucky.

Night 2:

The Ones That Got Away

Going into the second night, expectations were high. The group had already put Piggy’s on the ground, and they were eager to add to their tally. But this time, the Hogs had different plans. Field after field, they checked feeding areas, scanned tree lines, and waited for movement, but the pigs never showed.

That’s the challenge of Hunting Free-Range Wild Hogs—they’re unpredictable, and sometimes they simply disappear into the thick cover, leaving Hog Hunters with nothing but a long night of searching.
